mainly describes the setting out of the Pandavas on their forest exile, a spiritual discourse by Shaunaka, worship of Lord Surya by Yudhishthira to obtain a boon to sustain the large entourage of Brahmins following him in the forest, a disagreement between Dhritarashtra and Vidura, Vyasa'a advice to Dhritarashtra while Duryodhana plans to eliminate the Pandavas, and Rishi Maitreya's curse to Duryodhana.
